I absolutely devoured this book. I listened to the audio book version on 1.5 speed most of the way through and even popped into 1.75 and 2 speed because I needed to know what happened so badly. I had my suspicions and they were proved correct and it was so beautiful and lovely and ugh I’m so happy I picked this one up. I’ve been on a sci fi fantasy lgbt book binge these past couple of weeks and I ran out of that type of audio books to listen to at work so I took a chance on this one even though I don’t read much historical fiction and UGH THE BEST CHOICE I HAVE MADE RECENTLY!!!
I loved the way that the house was written, I loved the characters, the mythology woven into the story, the magic system, the intense romance that rose between our leading men, and the emotion that saturated the entire journey beginning to end. I spent my entire day listening to this at work, then when I got home I was actually annoyed because it meant I had to stop while I ate dinner with my family. Everyone was so well done and so well written! I’m genuinely sad it’s over now, I would have loved to be able to jump straight into a sequel haha.
Now begins my mission to find another book to top it, as soon as possible, a feat I think I’ll struggle with since I’ve worked my way through so many of the published audiobooks of the same type! I don’t want to spoil anything too much in this review but honestly give it a chance if you think it sounds intriguing.

Published: 17th Dec 2019 Reviewed: 14th Feb 2020 Magic rolls through Orion Tamura’s history classroom like a tidal wave of golden light that only he can see. The spell is deadly, and Orion has no idea who cast it or what they want. Answers are scarce—all of Port Monica’s sorcerers vanished fourteen years before, including Orion’s father. Armed with his limited knowledge of magic, Orion is the only one left in the city who is strong enough to investigate the origins of the spell. |

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The Relic Spell was a really fun, light read. The front cover drew me in straight away in all honesty. I know we’re told not to judge books by their covers and sometimes doing so leads to immense dissatisfaction about the story once you sink your teeth into it, but this time it didn’t lead me wrong.
The world building was intriguing and interesting, I got shadowhunter-y vibes from the fighting every now and again, and from the relationship between Orion and Max, but in a good way since I love that show and the dynamics in it. I loved the magic system and the use of mystery that saturated past events surrounding Orion’s father and the war that occurred.
For me the best part was the friendships and relationships between the characters that grew as the book progressed. I loved Orion and I felt quite a strong sense of kinship with him on certain unreciprocated feelings. I don’t want to spoil anything so I’m being careful of how I phrase this but, while the plot was interesting enough to hold my attention, it was definitely the interactions between the characters that kept me going.
Overall I would definitely recommend this one. A nice diverse cast of interesting and different characters rounds out the well crafted relationships and solid plot! Great for fans of urban fantasy YA.

Whoa boy. Where do I even BEGIN?
First of all, I received a copy of this book via Netgalley (thank you!) and this review is very very honest. I swear, the tear tracks are still fresh on my face.
From the first moment I read the synopsis of this book I knew I’d love it. Everything about it screamed “oh my god Lauren this is it!” and when I read the first chapter I sank into it so quickly and easily and all I wanted was to know more about the backstory of the world. Speaking of which, the world building is a marvel, I could almost smell the streets described within, and the characters were so alive and rich.
I don’t want to spoil anything about this, because it’s a book that is worth finding your way through page at a time not knowing what will happen next; my heart was in my throat several times, for several different reasons, and it’s the first book I’ve cried physical tears over in a while. It hit the found family trope with perfect precision, which is the definition of my weakness, with a slow build background m/m love story and friendships that are sometimes sharp and painful, and in some cases quite unique. The connection between Nate and Alden was one of my absolute favourite parts of Fragile Remedy, and it was one of the best, most interesting takes on a friendship I’ve read in recent memory.
I really hope there is a sequel planned. It doesn’t necessarily need it, as I think it does stand alone, but there are so many more answers I need, so many different aspects of the world still there to explore, and I really need to see more of the Alley Cats.

The last member of a murdered House tries to protect his ward from forced marriage to a monster while uncovering clues to his own past. As the sequel to The Last Sun, and the second book in the Tarot Sequence, this had a lot to live up to since The Last Sun is my favourite book. And boy, did K.D. meet and exceed my expectations with this one. |

I received an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review (but i also have it pre-ordered like, twice, so you can really honestly believe me when i tell you i love this freaking book).
PSA: if you haven’t read The Last Sun yet, don’t read this because there are minor spoilers kind of for the first book. There are also minor spoilers for The Hanged Man too.
Once every so often there comes a moment when something enters your life and takes you on a path you never could have imagined. One day in January last year I listened to The Last Sun on a whim, because it looked cool, it had good reviews and a talented narrator. I had no way of knowing that a year later i'd be taking part in a street team quest dedicated to promoting it. I didn't know all the cool people I'd meet, all the art we'd produce as a team, as a fandom on the whole. I've been in a lot of fandoms in my life, and created a lot of content, but i have never been as enthralled and caught by a book series as i have this one. I won't talk more about the street team, as tempting as it is, but if you want to learn more check out KD's twitter, it's full of great things!
On with the show.
The Hanged Man is a revelation. There is so much world building going on, so much detail added to an already detail rich world, that I know i'm going to have to read it a few times (which, hey, works out! I will have like four copies by the end of this haha). The additional information we got about the sun court, about the companion bond, about the other Arcanas... I can't even put into words. There are things that happen in this book that I kind of assumed would happen but like, four books down the line, and they were done so well too, so smoothly that even though I didn't expect them, I didn't question them, but i'm not going to spoil anything within this review because this book is a book you have to experience yourself. Trust me.
The action and fight scenes are some of the most well written, fast paced, heart pounding action scenes I’ve ever read. Ever time a fight came up or a chase occurred I was absolutely glued to the page. This was present in The Last Sun as well and it’s one of my favourite aspects of the series as a whole. As with The Last Sun though, despite the action scenes trying to steal the show, it’s the relationships and the characters in The Hanged Man that are a major driving force and the central reason as to why it shines so brightly.
Rune and Brand will always have a major share holder place in my heart, but there is an entire cast now vying for positions. Quinn and Max continue to be so freaking adorable and brave and smart that I could cry. Quinn's character arc in this book especially is so so good? Addam is just?? Such a pure soul? Such a kind person? I cannot get over how he's a real character that we get to enjoy and treasure. Lord Tower is. Well. You guys know how he is but he has some moments in this book that made me a lot less suspicious of him and a lot MORE suspicious of him at the same time. He is a conundrum but i love him. Mayan got more of a role too, and I loved every part of it! Queenie is still in the background a little and I'm convinced she has secrets!!!! If she does, I can't wait to see what they are. I loved Lady Death!! I hope she's sticking around she is super cool and almost exactly what I was hoping her to be.
Also, the introduction of Anna, Corbie and Layne was so well done! I won't say much here for fear of spoilers bc there are some BIG ones but I can't wait to see how things in that area progress.
But talking of Rune and Brand... oh my god. I will never get over their bond. Never. It's impossible. They're?? Everything?? There were moments in this book when they made me laugh and moments when they made me cry and moments where I wanted to scream. I still ship it to high heavens. Friends to lovers trope is like, the best invention ever, and I'm holding out for some lovely polyamory because i've long believed that the best way to end a love triangle is to involve everyone! More people more fun amiright??? (can u tell its 1:15am dear lord) but whether or not anything will come of that only time will tell. Either way, romantic or platonic, nothing will rival their love for each other and that is the foundation of this series. The most solid, well built foundation ever.
Rune is just. So powerful. And so wonderful. His progression through two books alone is awe inspiring, i can't even think about where we're going to be another three or four books down the line. I love how powerful and confident he is, I love that he knows his strength, that he knows when to play certain trump cards. KD knows how to do character development, he's shown this time and time again, and oh my god I cannot wait to see what Rune becomes.
So, where do we stand. Sometimes you read a book and you don't worry about the characters because you know they'll be fine, but i am constantly worrying about everyone, because the writing feels like it's real, like you're living it, like you're watching people you care about face off against such high odds. I have my theories about where aspects of this series will go but I also very much doubt whether any of them are correct, because KD is playing the long game and I am but a lowly sleep deprived reader, but i am so so excited to go on this journey. I can't wait to see where it takes us. I could prattle on for another five hundred paragraphs about how much i loved this book, but i think i've said all that needed saying, so i'll leave it at this. Read this book, folks, you won't regret it.

Published: 12th June 2018 Original Review Date: 28th Jan 2019 I'm going to be posting some of my GoodReads reviews on this blog, and I figure there's no better place to start than with the first book in my favourite series. The Tarot Series is fantastic in every way and it lead me to The Hanged Man street team a few months ago, and that marked the start of an idea to create a website blog specifically for reviews. Without this series, I wouldn't be typing this post out right now. |

** spoiler alert ** OKAY SO HERES THE THING. I am so in love with this book I could cry. Right from the start I knew exactly how in love I was going to be, some books are just like that. The fact that I have to wait months for a sequel is ruining my life. I have so many questions! I need answers!
(I listened to the audiobook version so some name spellings might be off in this review. Also disclaimer: I literally just finished and threw all my feelings into this review so it might be a bit all over the place and no cohesive just bear with me haha).
So firstly, speaking of the audiobook version, hands down one of the best narrations of a fiction book i've ever had the pleasure to listen to. Josh Hurley was a perfect choice, each of his character voices was unique and recognisable and he has such a good grasp of their personalities that it shines through as he speaks them. I would say "my soul for Josh Hurley to narrate any and all sequels of this book!" but lets be honest my soul has already gone on bargaining for time to pass faster so I can read the sequel.
Secondly, the world building of this fantasy universe is one of the most unique i've ever seen in a book. The way the magic system works is intriguing, as is the hierarchical system at play in the background. It feels fully formed and fleshed out and the cast of characters completely enhance this. I loved every single one of them. (Well, the ones we're supposed to love anyway. Ashton can go die in a ditch for the rest of eternity). Addam, Quinn, Max, Queenie, Brand, The Tower, Kieran and, of course, Rune himself. They each have such a distinct personality and presence and they each add something beautiful to the novel, from Addam's enchantingly kind heart and lovable dancing to Brand's own personal brand (ha!) of humour and open devotion to Rune, who himself is a powerhouse of caring and, well, power.
And talking of Rune. I am forever torn between wanting to wrap him in a blanket and feed him animal crackers and standing off to one side holding his coat while he beats up everyone in his path for justice tbh. He can even beat me up if it'll make him feel better. The way his past is slowly revealed through his character arc is so well done and emotional. I NEED him to get justice for himself. I need him to vaporise every single one of the people who hurt him when he was younger. Brand and Addam can help of course.
Which leads me to relationships!
I won't talk about all of them because part of the joy of this book is seeing them unfold for yourself but seriously The Last Sun is a treasure trove of good relationships.
Brand and Rune, for example, have the most pure bond that i've read in recent memory. And I'll be 100% honest with you I really want them to end up romantic. Polyamoury for the win! Addam and Rune, Rune and Brand what could possibly go wrong! Don't get me wrong, It won't be disappointing in the slightest if they stay platonic, Rune himself says several times in the novel that it isn't like that between them (unless this is a case of protesting TOO much lmao) and platonic relationships are just as important, if not more so, than romantic ones so I can definitely see them as platonic best friends who would die for each other because at present that is exactly what they are.
They're the most important people in each others life and that isn't a romantic thing at the heart of it, BUT that doesn't mean it couldn't go that way. They might be entirely made up in my head but i definitely felt VIBES between them at times. It all depends on how the author wants to play it because either way would work and either way would work WELL, which is the best thing. Their love for each other is so well written in The Last Sun that they could do anything for the rest of the series and as long as they do it together i'd be like "Yeah okay!" and 100% happy to read about it haha. As long as they're okay I'M okay.
I love every single god damned interaction they have on paper. Their bond is the most beautiful thing about this book and its the thing i'll be spending the majority of my life wishing I had. From their snarky banter to their genuine, open way of showing their love, its perfect. Brand trusts Rune to be able to look after himself multiple times which is SO SO important, and he stands by him anyway, ready to come to his defence. Just because he can take care of himself doesn't mean he should have to, especially when Brand can do it for him with 100x the stealth power and his self professed body guard training school lmao.
Overall, in all honesty, I cannot find fault in this book other than now that i've finished it I need the sequel like I need air and since The Hanged Man isn't out for what feels like a lifetime it might end up the death of me haha. I bought The Last Sun as an audiobook because it's easier for me to listen to while I'm at work and these days I only tend to buy the physical copies of book I love because they tend to be more expensive, but i will 100% be getting the physical copy of this, and The Hanged Man, when it comes out. Also I heard that there are going to be 9 books in this series, which, if that's true then I have a new reason to stay alive on top of getting to play The Last of Us 2 and reading The Queen of Nothing next year lmao. Keep 'em coming K.D. Edwards, keep 'em coming.
(I'm not even joking i dont know what to do with myself now that it's done. I have forgotten how life works. I can't even think about picking up another book when I know it's going to pale in comparison i am the embodiment of the crying emoji).
Edited to add: my second read of this was just as good as my first one I can’t WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL

Welcome to the Library of Lauren! I just spent the last four hours setting up this website so hopefully everything is running smoothly, please feel free to point out any issues or links that don't work or anything like that. The initial name I had for this was Lauren's Long List of Literary Likes, Loves and Longings because apparently I have a thing of alteration, but in the end it just took up too much space and honestly it was so long I got bored of saying it.
I'll be using this website to post all kinds of book reviews, make book rec lists and keep track of all the books I have on my incredibly long list of TBR. I listen to audiobooks, have kindle versions and physical copies too, and I think at last count it was at 130. I think my brain works on an "I finished one book so now I must buy three," kind of schedule.
Anyway, that's basically it for now. I'll still be posting my reviews on GoodReads and on my tumblr blog poemsforpersephone, at least until this site gets settled in.
Happy reading!
